once upon a time

Born on the outskirts of Chicago, Twink has never had a real name. Sure, she had a couple of foster families who thought they'd dub her something (she wasn't a Lucy, thanks, or a Jeanine) but for the most part, all Twink had was a diary with millions of names that started with T and her mother's thoughts.

The last page that was written on had two entries:

June 26th
It's definitely going to be T. Olio Kelly. Don't let them write Olivia instead. I like Olio.

June 29th
I'm sorry, baby.

According to her older brother and the few doctors she'd gotten in contact with, Twink had been born happy, healthy, and she and her mother were discharged the day after she was born-- June 29th.

Mikey told her that their mom had died as soon as Twink could understand death; he never lied to her.

But he sheltered her. Twink eventually asked him 'how' too many times and he got mad and he told her it was suicide. Told her their mom said, 'Mikey, watch your sister's crib, I'm going to take a bath.' Told her that she took a bath with a hairdryer. Told her, 'It's your fault, Twink. She never would've done it if she hadn't been pregnant.'

Of course, Mikey didn't mean it. He was an angry kid through the grieving process.

She never forgot it, though. Twink learned what guilt felt like when she was eight, holding an old, cream-colored phone to her ear while her fifteen year old brother broke down and cried.

When she was ten, Mikey graduated. When she hugged him and told him how happy she was for him, Mikey told her he'd never seen her smile that much. Said, 'Man, no wonder your name is Twink.'

When Mikey was done with college and working as a public accountant ('I'm good with numbers, Twink, I don't care if you think it's a boring job'), he officially adopted Twink on her fifteenth birthday. They went back to Chicago and shared a loft together.

Twink was happy. Her life exploded into something amazing when Mikey adopted her.

The first great thing in her new life?

A man named Micah Jones.

Mikey wasn't a parent, so he forgot to enforce a curfew. A lot. And Twink took advantage of that.

She met Micah on one of her late-night excursions with a group of friends ('I swear I'm not drunk like they are!'). One of the other girls got them kicked out of Starbucks before she could even order, and Micah came out to ask her what she wanted.

A blended caramel latte later and he was teasing her for her name. 'Twink,' he informed her, 'is another word for a girly little gay boy.'

'So I'm a girly gay guy,' she responded, 'what are you gonna do about it?'

Their inside joke from then on was that she made Micah like kissing boys.

A couple nights later in one of Micah's button-up shirts, she learned how old he was. Somehow, even though she was fifteen and he was 23, Twink couldn't help but still like him. He wasn't creepy-- definitely wasn't a pedophile, 'cause even if she was young, he hated kids ('Don't ever bring me to this park again, Twink') and avoided them at all costs. Even if they liked him.

What was initially harmless flirtation and kisses that made Twink blush like a little schoolgirl became a full-blown relationship once he asked her to be his date to some office party ('I need a reason to reject the secretary, please?').

Late nights didn't bother Mikey. Impromptu sleepovers that she forgot to tell him about did.

Telling Micah she was grounded for a week felt really silly.

A year later, Mikey's company was relocating to Boston. Time to say goodbye to Micah.

Soon she'd gotten over heartbreak and depression, went to prom with some cute blond kid in Boston and graduated. Halfway through October, her freshman year of college, Twink saw Micah again-- on TV, her mouth full of Reese's Puffs cereal.

Twink was abruptly grateful that she was still breathing.

it's true!

Any music with accompanying violins makes her start crying, and she has no idea why.

When her brother goes on business trips, she hides one of his shirts under her pillow so the place still smells like home.

She got the nickname Twink when she was five. Her brother took her to a park and gave her a locket that used to be their mom's. He said she twinkled and sparkled as much as the gold did that day, and 'Twink' stuck.

She's been growing her hair out since she was nine (with trims) and it's currently to mid-thigh. She dyes it routinely; last time it was peach highlights, this time it's raccoon tails.
